LEGOs: More than just for fun

Did you know that there are a lot of benefits and advantages to LEGOs? Kids, especially young boys love to play with LEGOs. They could sit for hours and build so many different and creative things. I know this because I have seen it with my own eyes here at our LEGO Days @ the Library.

What parents might not realize though are all of the wonderful benefits that are associated with LEGOs. Children are able to connect with their imagination while playing with these colorful blocks. This also always them to have open ended play and be their own problem solvers; looking for solutions to problems and figuring it out for themselves.

Additionally, LEGOs promote active learning. Hands on experience where they need to build, touch, and create things with their hands which in turn transfers to their mind. Working together with other children also helps them learn about collaboration, compromise, and group problem solving. All are important life skills to have.

Another way you can help your child learn through this process is through asking them questions about the processes they are going through. Talk to your child and find out why they are putting certain pieces where. Don’t be afraid to ask them about their building methods that failed. Use those as the learning experiences they are.

Not only does the Santa Clarita Public Library offer multiple LEGO programs each month which can be found here on our website calendar, we also have a wide variety of LEGO books, both fiction and nonfiction which can be found in our catalog as well as on our shelves. Feel free to ask your librarian today about any of these titles!
