Spotlight on Youth Services Librarian Emily Circhirillo

Enjoy reading the following about Youth Services Librarian Emily Circhirillo who works at the Valencia Branch.

1.What influenced you to become a children’s librarian?

Since I was little, I always thought I would become a teacher. While I was pursing my undergraduate degree, I had an internship inside of the university library and that is when I thought about a career in librarianship. It is the perfect way to combine my passion of helping children learn without having to grade papers!

2. What are your favorite children’s books?

There is not enough space to list all of them! I love any book by Lane Smith. The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, The Ramona Series by Beverly Cleary, Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish, George’s Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl (just to name a few!).

3. Tell us something unique about yourself.

I went to school in London for a time where I studied in different libraries, museums, and archives. I was able to see, and touch, and hold so many amazing books, documents, and artifacts. It was such an amazing experience.

4. Do you have any special talents?

I can be very creative and crafty. I love to make things out of paper, boxes, anything really. I spend a lot of my spare time sewing as well. Pinterest and Etsy are my two best friends.

5. What were you like as a child?

I was always the child who wanted to be so much older than I actually was. Now that I am a grown-up, I wish I had enjoyed the freedoms of childhood a little bit more.

6. What do you like best about your job? Least?

The best part about my job is seeing excitement on the faces of children. Whether it is finding a book for them they cannot wait to read, putting on a program in the library, or visiting a school classroom. Children have such a joy and excitement about all those things that seems to get lost as we grow up.

The least favorite part of my job would have to be when I cannot find a book or information that someone needs. One of the reasons why I became a librarian is to help people. And when the newest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book is all checked out and the waiting list is huge, I hate seeing the child walk away disappointed.

7. You recently had a baby. How is motherhood?

Motherhood is amazing! I can’t imagine my life without my daughter in it. I can’t wait until she is old enough to enjoy all the fun programs and storytimes the library has to offer.

8. If you could be any character in a book, who would it be and why?

Definitely Fancy Nancy. Everything in Fancy Nancy’s life is fancy. She loves feather boas and glitter (so do I!) and believes the fancier the better. She is fun, loves everything girly and all things fancy. I wish I could be as fancy as she is.
