Checkered mats with 20 chessmen per mat fill long rectangular tables. Concentration is evident. Teammates instruct each other. The audience talks among themselves. But, this is not a competitive chess match. Nor is it a match being held after school. The scene is one that can be seen at any of the Santa Clarita Public Library branches.
How can your child become a better leader? It could be as easy as playing chess on a regular basis. President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico has stated that his successes are due to his abilities to play the game of chess. According to the New York Times, Nieto changed the time for a strategy meeting because he wanted to finish a game. Would you like to bring your child to play a game that will help with their cognitive abilities? There is further research showing that learning to play chess may improve educational achievement.
Studies tell us that chess positively influences children from elementary through high school. If your child is school age or a teen, then please feel free to visit the Valencia Library, Jo Anne Darcy Canyon Country Library, or Old Town Newhall Library on a Thursday to enjoy playing a game of chess with a friend or someone new. Please check the calendar to see which library is hosting that particular event. There will always be someone available to play with. And, you do not need to know how to play chess to join the fun! Families are also welcome to attend.
