On Thursday, February 11th 2016 scientists announced that they have detected gravitational waves in space!
Why is this so important? Well, many years ago (in 1916 to be exact!) Albert Einstein predicted that gravitational waves happen in space based on his theory of general relativity. It took 100 years of science for astronomers to actually show this was true. How amazing is that!
Scientists say they know that the signal wasn’t a fluke or some other earthly disturbance because both detectors, more than 2,000 miles apart, felt the same wave within milliseconds of each other. (Shekhtman, 2016)
