Award-winning illustrator, Rafael Lopez will be visiting the Valencia branch of the Santa Clarita Public Library

Saturday, March 19th, at 1:30 p.m. as part of the Library’s One City, One Story Program. His illustrations in “Our California” celebrate the major cities and regions of the Golden State. Rafael will discuss and demonstrate his artistic process. He will also be available to autograph his books. Books will be available to purchase, or you can bring your copy from home.

Rafael Lopez is this year’s winner for the Pura Belpre Medal for his illustration art in “Drum Dream Girl.” His vibrant acrylic-on-wood paintings help bring the story to life.  The Belpre Award is given to honor the work that best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in children’s books. Previously, Rafael won the Belpre Award in 2010 for his illustrations in “Book Fiesta!” Rafael has been the recipient of Belpre honors in 2014, 2012, and 2004. He won the America’s award in 2006 for his work in “My Name is Celia.”

Rafael Lopez has contributed to the Urban Art Trail Project located in his part-time home city, San Diego, CA. His murals can be found in California, Colorado, Illinois and Washington.
