Get Your Afternoon Wiggles Out at Movers and Shakers

Can’t wake the kid up to make it to early morning storytimes? Can’t wake the kid up to make it to later morning storytimes? Can’t wake yourself up???

Maybe your kid is in preschool and doesn’t get out until noon? Maybe you have too many school drop-off’s and errands to run and aren’t free until lunch?

Well, Movers and Shakers is for you. Movers and Shakers is a new kind of storytime being offered at Canyon Country Library. It starts at 1:00 PM every Thursday from now until the week before Thanksgiving, and it is hosted by me, Miss Angie.

Since you might be coming straight from lunch, straight from nap, or straight from school, your kid probably has some wiggles he might need to get out. For this reason, Movers and Shakers starts with playtime. For the first half of the hour, there are stations set up with hands-on activities such as a cutting and pasting or homemade flubber and more. These activities are geared toward children 3-5, since sometimes scissors or something small enough to swallow might be out. There are also toys out for kids who finish the activity quickly and for younger siblings who are always welcome.

After thirty minutes of play, the kids are asked to help clean up the room so the storytime can begin. The group gathers on the floor, and we read books and sing songs together. At the end of the hour, we say our goodbye. This is a great time for the kids to go explore the library and find books to check out. Movers and Shakers is entering it’s third week, and it is off to a great start. Last week, we had about 40 people in attendance. If you are looking for a place to meet other kids and meet other parents, Movers and Shakers is a great place to be.

I am a children's librarian at SCPL's Canyon Country Library. My favorite things are funny books, ice cream, and the Matterhorn at Disneyland.
