Hidden Gems

Parents were grabbing flyers and information while their children were picking up free book marks and other goodies. Many questions were being asked such as: “Is there a charge? Do you have programs for K-6th graders? What is Dia De Los Ninos? Can you drop off your library books at other libraries? How do you get to the free databases?” Some participants were amazed at some of the information like the fact 50 items can be checked out on one library card and there is free daily printing up to $1.

The excitement took place at an elementary school’s resource fair attended by many various community organizations. This was a fun event and I thought I could share my answers to their questions as many library customers may have the same questions.

First of all, everything is free– unless you are late in returning a book, you want to purchase something from the bookstore (very low prices), or you want extra printing past the $1 a day (.10 for black and white on the eleventh page or .50 for color after the second page). This means that it will not cost you anything to get a library card. All of our programs and supplies are free also. Any items that children create either in storytimes or after school programs is theirs to keep!

We have programs for babies to adults. The schedule for the K-6th grade programs for all three branches is located on our website at santaclaritalibrary.com. You will find a variety of fun as well as educational programs and special events such as art, Legos, science, a llama party featuring a live llama and more! Dia De Los Ninos is an annual event held at the Canyon Country Library. It is fun for the whole family and the library inside and out will feature activities such as face painting, performances, a storytime, free books for kids (while supplies last), a live llama, crafts, and so much more!

One of the most often asked questions is where can library books be dropped off.  If you have a Santa Clarita Library card then you can drop off your books at the Valencia, Canyon Country, or Old Town Newhall libraries. If you prefer digital reading then all you need to download is the Overdrive or Libby App. Go to e-library and there are step by step instructions, or feel free to come to digital help at the library.  We are also available to show you how to access our free databases.  Some have live tutoring help while others are good for research, reading consumer reports, and even listening to songs from the Sony music catalog.

Please check out some of the wonderful programs and know that we are available to answer any of your questions! The library is a fantastic resource in which we want you to find all of the gems you want!
