Another year of summer reading has come to an end…

The Santa Clarita Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Paws to Read” has concluded, but it does not mean it is too late to keep reading those books for the rest of summer! Studies have proven that children who continue to read throughout the summer are less likely to be effected by “the summer slide”, a loss in academic gains from the previous school year. In addition, reading helps to increase your child’s vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.  For more information about the benefits of reading during summer, the New York State Library and the California Library Association have great information on their websites.

Our “Paws to Read” program concluded Friday night at the City of Santa Clarita’s Summer Bash hosted in Canyon Country. Santa Clarita Public Library staff was raffling off prizes and handing out free books. The event had hundreds of people in attendance and was a huge success. Check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for pictures of this event and other library events.

Overall, this year’s summer reading program was wildly successful. Over 4,000 children, teens, and adults registered for the program either online or within one of our three branches. Over a seven week period, over 3,800 children and their parents attended storytimes, over 2,200 children attend our in-house library programs geared towards children grades K-6th, and more than 1,800 were in attendance at our off-site performer events.

We are hoping that many of you attended our events and programs and that you all had a wonderful experience. Encouraging children to read is part of our job on a daily basis, but our Summer Reading Program allows us to promote reading with fun programs and experiences for children of all ages and provide free books for children to keep at home for their own library.
