Parents often come to the reference desk seeking books for their young advanced reader. Usually, their child is no longer interested in the books recommended for their age or grade level. The child may choose reading for pleasure over other activities. As parents, they want to encourage the child’s love of reading. Yet suddenly they are thinking about the themes portrayed in the books their child is reading. Thus begins a quest to find age appropriate books for their young reader, They seek books that will interest their child without bringing up themes that their young reader may not be psychologically ready to tackle.
In reference interviews like these, I often recommend classics, books that have stood up to the test of time. These great books are usually filled with interesting characters and grand adventures. These books make great read-alouds. So whether you are looking for something your advanced reader can read on her own, or a longer book to read to your child over a period of time, these books are for you.
